Hydra - A Multi-Party Desktop Video-Conferencing System

Hydra is a desktop video-conferencing system that employs what could be called "video surrogates" in order to provide the same kind of spatial cues that are found in face-to-face conversation. Each of the remote people occupies a specific location on one's desk, and the placement on the desk is maintains an "around the same table" spatial geometry as all people were in the same room. By integrating each person into a single physically and distinct unit, the camera is not a camera, but a surrogate eye. The speaker is not a speaker, but a surrogate mouth, The microphone is not a microphone is not a microphone but asurrogate ear, and the ear, mouth and eye are all attached to the body, which is where the monitor is. This arrangement supports gaze awareness, turn taking, eye contact and parallel conversations (due to the discrete audio channels and the "cocktail party effect"). Furthermore, none of the remote people's image appears on the computer screen - leaving it free for shared work. In this manner, a strong sense of telepresence is provided. This work was done in 1991-92 jointly by Abi Sellen and William (Bill) Buxton of the Ontario Telepresence Project at the University of Toronto, and by John Arnott and his team at the Arnott Design Group of Toronto. Greater the percentage of those placed, the better the quality of education imparted by these B-schools- this is the general notion. It was this issue that was taken up for a panel discussion on April 17 by Praxis Business School on the occasion of the convocation ceremony of class of '09 and '10. The Structure of Matter

An interesting experiment with varying degrees of angular placement of a powerful green laser (~ 200-milliwatt), a glossy surface (in this case, a black plastic speaker playing music). The song is called "We Meet At Last" by "Liquid Stranger". Technically, the reflected laser light forms what is referred to as "diffraction patterns", however the phenomena is a bit more complex than this. Clearly, you can see the molecular structure of the polypropylene begin to vivify due to the intense heat of the 200mw beam. When this is coupled with music, the vibrations caused by the music seem to influence this process. The result is nothing short of incredible to watch. The sound of the Allen on this recording was the best it ever sounded in the Cathedral, after much experimentation with speaker placement and tuning from the console by Organ Curator Doug Hunt and Allen's technicians. This is my review on the Dell Streak and how much it sucks. Not mentioning how stupid it was to launch this product with 1.6 android is another story. It tries to rival the ipad and fails miserably. Should have used the fish n chips for more eq shaping. Guitar is Les Paul tuned down 1 step. I was sitting in an bad playing position so the stops/flubs are me compensating when the guitar was slipping away. Recorded on the Flip camcorder. "opus dei" - Monacor SPH-170TC excursion test

the second "player" is a RFT B7186 full range bookshelf speaker (10w 4ohm), i have a pair of theese powered by a homemade 2x10-15w amp. back to the sub: -6.5 inch monacor sph-170tc dvc woofer (parallel wiring), more details here: monacor.ro -the amp used is the plate amp from a 5.1 altec lansing 151i, low power compared to the woofer so i get distortion. this is only temporary. -the enclosure: 17 liter sealed, and overdamped Qtc around 0.5, stuffed with two pillows, polyfill i guess/hope. -although far from perfection, it sounds pretty decent. it gets a bit boomy in 50Hz region depending on placement, and it hits 30Hz. good for music, and decent for movies. but there is room for more. -so i will modify it into a ported enclosure, Vb will change, there will be 4 downfiring ports (you can see them near the enclosure) tuned to about 25Hz. it will be interesting. -i will update as soon as it gets done. Felisa Z. Serrano (SfC Graduate) Felisa came from the Philippines in 1991 and was employed as a domestic worker in Toronto for two years. She had studied business administration and accounting in her home country and was determined to improve her job opportunities in Canada. Upon completion of her contract as a domestic worker, Felisa found work as a Laundry and Valet Attendant in a hotel and began to upgrade her qualifications at the same time. During this period Felisa faced economic hardship, as her minimum wage had not only to meet her own personal expense but had to provide for her family back home. Nevertheless, Felisa began to upgrade her skills and completed advanced computer technology certification and import and export business management certification from a vocational college. In 1998, Felisa graduated from the Computerized Clerical Accounting program at Skills for Change. This program has a co-op placement component where she was assigned to the Canadian Pacific Hotel and Resorts for a two-month period. At the end of the placement, she was hired full-time as an accounting clerk and later promoted to accounts receivable analyst. She is currently pursuing part-time studies at the University of Toronto and working towards a certificate in Business Management. Felisa has volunteered at the Bayview Community Hospice and volunteers at Skills for Change as a guest speaker, encouraging SfCs clients to pursue their dreams.

Tone comparison-VOX AC30 vs. VOX Ad15

I recently picked a vox ad15 up off of ebay for about 40 bucks on a whim and have been pretty impressed wiht this little guy! I wanted to show how similar or dissimilar the two sound (you make the call). I apologize for my rambling and stuttering-I had to put one of my dogs to sleep this morning and I am sad. I am just randomly noodling and playing open chords and barre chords-no virtuoso demonstration of talent!. I tried to get the amps to sound as close as possible but probably failed due to camera placement,etc. Oh well, I will probably do another one or two of these to show overdrive sounds and different guitars. Enjoy and let me know what you think! Does the AD15 come close enough to warrant buying one or not?

Since the last writing, we've (unfortunately) finished our summer schedules and gone back to the regular grind (which, oddly, means fewer hours, but is somehow more taxing...). We now only have Mondays off, and put in the heavy duty hours on Saturdays and Sundays (six to seven hours each). Saturdays and Sundays are the kiddie days: we start teaching at 8:30 and push through until 7:15 on Saturdays and 5:00/5:45 on Sundays. The rest of the week typically belongs to the older generations, and most of our teaching on those days happens in the eve. I've also been teaching a fifteen year old lad one-on-one, which is a new, but enjoyable experience, and Konrad has started doing a lot of placement testing (meaning he interviews new students and determines their current level). I got my wish granted and was moved to the school a few blocks from our house, so that's really great -- no more insane driving for me. Unfortunately, the move meant that my schedule had to suffer a bit, which has been a bit of a headache. To accommodate, I've been doing a lot of "covers" -- subbing for vacationing or sick teachers.
