Hydra - A Multi-Party Desktop Video-Conferencing System

Hydra is a desktop video-conferencing system that employs what could be called "video surrogates" in order to provide the same kind of spatial cues that are found in face-to-face conversation. Each of the remote people occupies a specific location on one's desk, and the placement on the desk is maintains an "around the same table" spatial geometry as all people were in the same room. By integrating each person into a single physically and distinct unit, the camera is not a camera, but a surrogate eye. The speaker is not a speaker, but a surrogate mouth, The microphone is not a microphone is not a microphone but asurrogate ear, and the ear, mouth and eye are all attached to the body, which is where the monitor is. This arrangement supports gaze awareness, turn taking, eye contact and parallel conversations (due to the discrete audio channels and the "cocktail party effect"). Furthermore, none of the remote people's image appears on the computer screen - leaving it free for shared work. In this manner, a strong sense of telepresence is provided. This work was done in 1991-92 jointly by Abi Sellen and William (Bill) Buxton of the Ontario Telepresence Project at the University of Toronto, and by John Arnott and his team at the Arnott Design Group of Toronto. Allen, Keynote Speaker at the ICWA Teach-In, October 28, 2011, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs hearing room, Washington DC. Part 1 - Birthright Citizenship, Reconstructive Amendments Indian Children: Citizens, not Cultural Artifacts - Are Some Children's Lives Destroyed by ICWA? Indian Child Welfare Act "Teach-In" Friday, October 28, 2011, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Hearing Room, Wash, DC Keynote speaker: Dr. William B. Allen - Emeritus Professor, Political Science, MSU and former Chair of the US Commission on Civil Rights (1989) Across America, children who had never been near a reservation nor involved in tribal customs - including multi-racial children with extremely minimal blood quantum - have been removed from homes they know and love and placed with strangers chosen by tribal social services. The Indian Child Welfare Act was passed in 1978 in effort to help prevent Native-American tribes and families from losing children to non-Native homes through foster care and adoption. Though well-intentioned, the Act is now harming children all across the country as courts and tribes place culture and tribal sovereignty above children's basic needs for permanency and stability. Listen as the constitutionality of an Act that limits placement options and delays permanency for many of our nation's most vulnerable children is discussed. 1 ...

Dr.Prithwis Mukerjee at Praxis Panel Discussion 2010

Popularity of B-schools these days rests on their placement records. Greater the percentage of those placed, the better the quality of education imparted by these B-schools- this is the general notion. It was this issue that was taken up for a panel discussion on April 17 by Praxis Business School on the occasion of the convocation ceremony of class of '09 and '10. The panel consisted of K Dasaratharaman, President, Specialty Businesses, Spencer's Retail, Shankar Chatterjee, Managing Director, Bertling Logistics, Dr Prithwis Mukerjee, Professor, VG-SoM IIT Kharagpur and Santosh Desai, MD & CEO, Future Brands Ltd, Future Group. Moderating the discussion was Prof Charanpreet Singh, Associate Dean, Praxis Business School. Singh elaborated on the topic and presented both its sides -- why should B-schools not be called placement agencies and B-schools should have a greater aim. Opening the discussion was K. Dasaratharaman. The IIM A passout spoke about the philosophical, cultural and sociological aspects of a B-school. He humorously narrated how students of reputed B-schools can easily get a credit card or find a spouse. What made his speech stand out was however a unique observation: "Life is not a choice of 'or' but it is the tyranny of the 'and'. While you do one thing you have to be conscious of its opposite." He concluded his speech by advising students to be multi-potent and ambidextrous." Referring to the issue under scrutiny, the next speaker Shankar Chatterjee ...
